Blessuan Austin
Former NFL Defensive Back • New York Jets • 5 Seasons in the League
Blessuan Austin is a former NFL defensive back whose journey reflects growth, perseverance, and the willingness to change when it matters most.
With over 18 years dedicated to the game of football, including 5 seasons in the NFL with the New York Jets, his path has been anything but straightforward.
Where It All Began
Raised between Brooklyn and Queens, Blessuan didn't start off as a model student or athlete. He struggled in the classroom, took the SAT six times, attended summer school every year, and faced behavioral challenges that led to him being removed from his high school team as a freshman starting quarterback. At that point, things could have easily gone in a different direction.
But over time, he began to take accountability.
Midway through his sophomore year, being around a more mature varsity environment helped shift his perspective. He started putting in extra effort academically, retaking classes, adding more to his workload, and slowly building better habits. By his junior year, he had earned back his role as a starting quarterback while continuing to improve in the classroom.
By the time he graduated from Campus Magnet High School, he had earned 1st Team All-City and 1st Team All-Queens honors, a reflection of steady growth rather than overnight success.
The Transition
Because of earlier academic setbacks, Blessuan attended Milford Academy, where he made another adjustment, transitioning from quarterback to cornerback. That change, along with a strong season, helped him earn a 4-star recruiting rating from ESPN and a scholarship opportunity to Rutgers University.
Rutgers University

At Rutgers, he was given an opportunity early and made the most of it, starting as a true freshman and going on to start 22 games in his first two seasons. As a sophomore, he earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention.
Facing Adversity
Not long after, he faced one of the toughest stretches of his career.
Blessuan tore his ACL twice, limiting him to just 5 games over his final two college seasons. It was a period that required patience, discipline, and trust in a process that didn't always feel certain.

During NFL Combine training, he also suffered a Grade 2 hamstring injury, which meant preparing for one of the most important moments of his career while physically limited. He still chose to participate in his Pro Day, understanding that his performance might not fully reflect his ability.
The NFL
Even with those challenges, he was drafted by the New York Jets.

When he entered the league, the work continued. His recovery process was extended, leading to nearly 2.5 years of rehabilitation. He missed spring OTAs, preseason, and the first 7 weeks of the season. There were no shortcuts, just consistent effort behind the scenes.
When his opportunity came, he approached it the same way he had approached everything else: one step at a time.
Within a few weeks of returning, he was able to earn a starting role.
Blessuan went on to play 5 seasons in the NFL. More importantly, his experiences both the challenges and the progress have shaped how he views growth, discipline, and self-awareness.
Today
Today, he focuses on sharing those lessons with others.
His story isn't about being perfect. It's about learning, adjusting, and continuing forward, especially when things don't go as planned.
Because sometimes, the biggest progress comes from simply choosing not to give up on yourself.
